The pirate known as Alanin Grest once worked aboard the vessel known as the Filthy Lucre, captained by the fierce corsair currently regarded as the Hurricane King of Port Peril. Alanin eventually put aside enough funds to secure his own galleon that he christened, The Wave of Chaos. In his many years at sea Captain Grest partook in his share of ventures of the cardinal flesh. During one such trip to the settlement of Ollo, not the Captain’s first journey to the island, he was greeted by a woman by the name of Jesnell Shirath. Shirath did not come alone though. In her arms she held a baby boy with eyes the same as Captain Grest’s. Grest took no interest in the child, and made his trip to Ollo a short one. Shirath’s heart was shattered, but rather than moving on she decided to try to use the child to pull Grest back into her life.

The child was raised with a love for the open sea. As soon as he was old enough he was sent to the docks to work until he would be taken in by a local ship. Years went by and the child was eventually taken aboard the Gills of the East, a raiding vessel. He spent months aboard the vessel, and found the open sea a welcome change from the constant rantings of his mother. Lost in her sorrow, his mother hoped that the boy would one day find his father on the sea, and that the Captain would see how useful the boy has become and return to the mother’s life.

Years passed by, and Captain Grest was never found. The boy found father figures in many sailors, and eventually returned to port. As he walked through Ollo, he saw surprise on the faces of the locals. “We didn’t think he’d come back.”, and “Do you think he knows?” were the whispers he heard as he moved towards his mother’s home. The front of the small cottage was empty, and the flowers outside long dead. The boy entered the cottage and called out to his mother, but there was no response. He rushed through the cottage, but she was no-where to be found. With the cottage completely bare of welcome, he ran to the Spotted Spear Tavern to speak to the caretaker, and close friend of the family, Renil Brhust.

Brhust, just as surprised to see the boy as the other villagers, sat down and explained that his mother was a casualty of a recent Sahuahin raid on the town. Stricken with grief, the boy got up from his seat at the tavern and walked towards the exit.

“What will you do?” Brhust asked as the boy walked away.

The boy turned around with his eyes fixed on the ground "My entire life I have been forced to live the life that my mother asked of me. My father’s spirit belonged to the sea. He took no interest in the life a family has to offer. With my mother gone, I am free to be whatever I want to be now. The only problem is that I have no idea what that might be. I’ll find my place though . . . " The boy then looked Bhurst in the eyes “. . . or my name isn’t Breenan Shirath.”

The boy then turned and walked out of the tavern to begin his journey of self discovery.
